Augmented Reality for Camouflage Painting: SZENARIS Develops Solution for GDELS

Applying camouflage patterns to vehicles is a labor-intensive process. To make this process more efficient and reproducible, SZENARIS has developed a powerful augmented reality solution on behalf of GDELS.

The application developed for augmented reality glasses projects the contours of the camouflage patterns precisely onto the vehicle surface, thereby enabling straightforward transfer and marking of the pattern contours to prepare for subsequent work processes. The result is a visual guide that is consistent and transferable to different vehicle types. Calibration is performed via QR codes, which enable rapid synchronization. After scanning, the appropriate 3D vehicle model and the corresponding camouflage pattern contours are automatically loaded. For additional support, differently colored areas are clearly marked, for example with letters such as “B” for brown or “S” for black.

The AR software has a modular design, allowing different vehicle types and paint patterns to be easily integrated. Specific requirements of individual vehicles can also be accommodated, such as adjustable angles of movable components. The use of the AR solution thus leads to significantly more efficient workflows in the paint shop, reduces sources of error, and increases process reliability. At the same time, it improves paint quality and standardizes the application process across different vehicle types. As a result, the application makes a measurable contribution to the optimization of production processes and to sustainable digitalization in industrial manufacturing.
